Michael McCarthy
Labour
Party 3

Incumbent :

Main message to voters:

Elected in the midst of the most catastrophic economic collapse in Irish history. I have worked tirelessly since then to help restore stability and growth to the local economy. I have also worked to improve vital public services in Cork South-West to make our community a better place to live.

Election history:

A native of Dunmanway in west Cork, I entered politics at the age of 22 gaining a seat for the Labour Party on Cork County Council in the Skibbereen Electoral Area. First elected to the Seanad in 2002, and re-elected in 2007. Elected to Dáil Eireann in 2011.

Priorities:

  1. My absolute priority remains economic and social recovery in my community and local job creation.
  2. Reforming taxation for low and middle income earners, making homes affordable, investing in workers, and locating health services in the community.
  3. The provision of affordable, good quality childcare is a crucial issue for young families across the country and it is also a priority for me.
