Gary Gannon

Social Democrats

For over 10 years I’ve been privileged to represent Dublin Central. I advance strong and progressive politics. I believe we need quality public services to achieve a more equal society, and that we must act urgently to avoid irreversible climate catastrophe.

Priorities

  • Other

My first priority is a safer Dublin. We need a multi-agency response led by the Dept of the Taoiseach, to restore our capital to its former glory.

  • Other

We need affordable and public childcare that works for families. Childcare costs should be capped at €250 a month, staff should earn a living wage.

  • Housing

The housing crisis is one of the biggest challenges today. We need to build more houses, eradicate homelessness and introduce protections for renters.

Taxes and spending
1 of 32 questions
Money that is currently being saved for future policy challenges (such as climate change and an ageing population) should be spent now on things like housing and healthcare.
  • Agree Match with candidate
  • Neither agree nor disagree
  • Disagree
  • No opinion
Comments:

"While it would be impossible, and inadvisable, to spend all this money now, there is plenty of scope to use it in the shorter term on hugely important climate and infrastructure projects like upscaling wind energy, and building affordable housing."

Taxes on people earning over €100,000 a year should be increased.
  • Agree Match with candidate
  • Neither agree nor disagree
  • Disagree

Comments:

"People on the highest incomes should contribute more. The Social Democrats would phase out tax credits for the highest earners, beginning with those who earn in excess of €108,000 pa. "

The Universal Social Charge (USC) is a necessary source of revenue and should be kept.
  • Agree Match with candidate
  • Neither agree nor disagree
  • Disagree
  • No opinion
Comments:

"The USC raises approx. €5 billion in tax revenue every year, which is critical for the provision of important public services. Those calling for its abolition should say where the €5 billion needed to replace it would come from."

4 of 32 questions
Tax on inheritance should be reduced, even if it means cutting back on public spending or increasing other taxes.
  • Agree
  • Neither agree nor disagree
  • Disagree Match with candidate
  • No opinion
Comments:

"Less than 3% ever pay inheritance tax – it is only paid by a minority who inherit relatively large sums. There’s no good reason to tax inheritance, which is received by accident of birth, more favourably than productive activities like work. "

5 of 32 questions
Universal payments, such as child benefit and energy credits, should be replaced with more targeted measures aimed at the less well-off.
  • Agree Candidate position
  • Neither agree nor disagree Your position
  • Disagree
  • No opinion
Comments:

"We would not remove child benefit from families, which is an important universal payment. However, the Social Democrats have always called for energy credits to be more targeted at those who needed it most – low and middle income earners. "

- Social Democrats

Housing
6 of 32 questions
The government should focus on making houses more affordable rather than providing financial supports to first-time buyers.
  • Agree Match with candidate
  • Neither agree nor disagree
  • Disagree
  • No opinion
Comments:

"‘Help to buy’ is driving record house price increases and should be phased out, while investment in the provision of genuinely affordable housing is massively increased. The Social Democrats have a fully costed plan to provide 75,000 genuinely affordable homes."

- Social Democrats

Housing

  • Agree
  • Neither agree nor disagree
  • Disagree Match with candidate

  • Agree Match with candidate
  • Neither agree nor disagree
  • Disagree
  • No opinion
Comments:

"Rent Pressure Zone legislation is not working, with the rules routinely being flouted without consequence by some landlords. We need a temporary three-year freeze to provide relief to renters and allow supply to increase. "

  • Agree
  • Neither agree nor disagree Your position
  • Disagree Candidate position
  • No opinion
Comments:

"Property Tax is an important part of a broad tax base in all developed countries, and local authorities need it to provide important services and amenities. Property ownership is a manifestation of wealth, which is impossible to move offshore. "

  • Agree Match with candidate
  • Neither agree nor disagree
  • Disagree

  • Agree Match with candidate
  • Neither agree nor disagree

  • Agree Match with candidate
  • Neither agree nor disagree
  • Disagree

Comments:

"Ireland’s waterways are in an appalling condition and agricultural pollution is the main reason. Government has been leading Irish farmers off a cliff by pretending the nitrates derogation can continue indefinitely. Farmers must be supported to farm more sustainably. "
